A travel authorisation, not a visa
ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt travellers visiting 30 European countries for short stays. It is an electronic, largely automated pre-screening that is linked to your passport. In spirit it is the European equivalent of the United States' ESTA.
ETIAS is not a visa. There is no embassy appointment, no biometric interview and no sticker in your passport. Instead, you complete an online application; the system checks your details against relevant security databases, and most applicants receive an approval electronically.
What it is for
The goal of ETIAS is to strengthen the security of Europe's external borders by identifying potential risks before travellers arrive, while keeping travel smooth for the vast majority of visitors. Border officers will still make the final decision on entry — an approved ETIAS does not, by itself, guarantee entry.
How long it lasts
Once issued, an ETIAS is expected to be valid for up to three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During that period it allows multiple trips for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. If you get a new passport, you will need a new ETIAS.
How much it costs
The official government fee is €20 per adult applicant. Travellers under 18 and over 70 are expected to be exempt from the fee, though they still need an authorisation. This official fee is separate from any service fee charged by a private assistance provider such as ETIAS Requirements.
ETIAS vs a Schengen visa
| ETIAS | Schengen visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Visa-exempt nationalities | Visa-required nationalities |
| Application | Online, mostly automated | At an embassy / consulate |
| Processing | Often minutes (can take longer) | Days to weeks |
| Validity | Up to 3 years | Typically per trip |
| Official fee | €20 | Around €90 (varies) |
| Biometrics | Not required | Usually required |
ETIAS and the US ESTA are similar in concept. Both are electronic travel authorisations for visa-exempt travellers, tied to a passport and obtained online before travel. If you have used ESTA to visit the United States, ETIAS will feel familiar.
